The different types of male incontinence
Each case of male incontinence is different depending on the patient's situation. It may or may not be related to another condition or injury. A consultation with a doctor will help to clarify the symptoms and determine the type of incontinence being experienced:
- Urge incontinence
- Stress incontinence
- Overflow incontinence
- Functional incontinence
- Incontinence of neurological origin
Understanding the different types of bladder weakness and the mechanisms involved also helps to determine the most appropriate treatment to combat its effects.
Urge incontinence
Among the different types of bladder weakness, urge incontinence, also known as urinary frequency incontinence, is a condition in which a person feels sudden and urgent need to urinate. In most cases, it is impossible to hold back and this leads to involuntary and uncontrolled urine loss.
With no time to go to the toilet, this type of incontinence usually occurs frequently during the day and night.
The main cause of urge incontinence is a overactive bladder which suddenly contracts when it shouldn't.
Different treatments can be used:
- Anticholinergics: these drugs have the effect of blocking chemicals produced by the body and can be prescribed to treat certain allergies, sleep disorders or nausea;
- The perineal rehabilitation in case of incontinence by bladder instability ;
- The surgery Botulinum toxin injection, neurostimulation or enteroplasty;
- Palliative means: incontinence pants, retro urethral slings, penis clamp...
- Natural solutions: in decoction, the cypress nut is an ally not to be neglected when it comes to relieving bladder weakness.
This type of incontinence can be linked to another disease (urinary infection, calculus, bladder polyp, etc.), it is essential to conduct a review and to rule out any other cause.
Stress-related incontinence
Stress incontinence is a pathology linked to a physical effort sudden or prolonged, voluntary or not: sneezing, carrying a heavy load... but also chronic constipation, or obesity or overweight which stress and fatigue the whole body.
While the main cause of incontinence for women is related to a attenuation of muscles of the perineum and sphincter during childbirth, the main cause for men is the prostatectomy.
In the case of stress incontinence, the bladder and ducts no longer function properly and the slightest pressure on the abdomen causes urine to leak.
The consequences of different types of bladder weakness on social, professional or love life can be very serious and lead to isolation and even depression. It is therefore not trivial and should be addressed in order to find solutions.
As with urge incontinence, there are many different appropriate treatments to each situation.
Stress incontinence and urge incontinence can occur together: this type of incontinence is called mixed incontinence.
Overflow incontinence
Overflow incontinence means that the bladder does not empty completely during micturition, usually due to an obstruction in the urinary tract. The volume of urine therefore quickly exceeds the capacity of the bladder and overflows. This results in the frequent need to urinate, in small quantities each time (drip-feed).
This pathology typically male may be a symptom of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or prostate cancer. These risks increase with age. Nevertheless, a healthy lifestyle and a balanced diet rich in fibre and antioxidants, avoiding astringent drinks (tea, coffee, alcohol), can considerably prevent the risk of prostate adenoma.
Functional incontinence
Functional incontinence is usually related to external damage and independent of the urinary system. These may be physical disorders leading to a reduction in mobility (immobility, visual impairment, arthrosis, hernia, etc.), or cognitive disorders such as Alzheimer's, the after-effects of a stroke, a brain injury, a degeneration, etc.
These conditions prevent the patient from either going to the toilet quickly, or from being aware of or feeling the urge to go (forgetfulness).
In this case, functional incontinence is neither a symptom nor a cause, but a consequence. Treating this type of urinary leakage consists of treat the pathology from which it arises.
Incontinence of neurological origin
Known as reflex incontinence, or neurogenic incontinence, incontinence of neurological origin involves a defect in nerve transmission. Among the diseases of the nervous system that can cause this type of urinary leakage are
Diseases of the central nervous system :
- Multiple sclerosis: affecting the brain and spinal cord, this disease causes damage to the nerves of the bladder and motor disorders
- Parkinson's disease: a neurodegenerative disease that causes dopamine deficiency, which leads to urinary problems
- Stroke: the consequences vary according to the extent of the stroke and its after-effects
Diseases of the peripheral nervous system :
- Diabetic neuropathy: damage to peripheral nerves, leading to stagnation of urine in the bladder
- Chronic alcoholism Alcoholism: which can be accompanied by impotence, this type of alcoholism leads to intoxication of the brain and all the body's organs
The main consequences, leading to a bladder dysfunctionare :
- Sphincter insufficiency
- Overactive bladder
- Bladder muscle paralysis
Before any treatment, it is essential to be certain of the origin of the urinary disorder. To this end, a urodynamic testing can be prescribed.
